1. Using Hand Signs to Track with Bass Lines

(using root-position I, IV, and V in preparation for Karpinski Chapter 37)

Try moving your hands to the music to indicate the scale degrees of the bass line as you listen to the music.  You might use the traditional hand signs shown on the left, the hand positions shown on the right, or both.  The hand positions are easiest.

Expanding Possibilities for Bass Lines  

(for use with Karpinski Chapter 37)

Hand shapes and/or hand positions can be added for all the scale degrees.  A logical next step is to add hand signs for scale degrees 3 and 7, and also 6, so as to be able to handle I6, V6, and also IV6.
